1. What is a Engineering Manager at Ashby?
As an Engineering Manager at Ashby, you are stepping into a pivotal leadership role where you will help scale a high-performing engineering organization that is doubling in size. This position is critical to maintaining Ashby’s unique engineering culture, which prioritizes minimal process, high ownership, and deep trust in engineers. Rather than breaking down projects into individual tickets or managing through rigid bureaucracy, you will foster an environment where engineers write product specs, make strategic product decisions, and drive significant business impact with complete autonomy.
Your primary mission is twofold: you will practice grassroots leadership by managing a tight-knit team of 3 to 5 exceptional engineers while hiring 3 to 5 more, and you will drive department-wide initiatives that increase leverage across the entire company. You will work closely with leadership, including co-founders and engineering directors, to shape how Ashby scales its product and culture. Whether you are reviewing technical and product specs to help ICs cut scope and sharpen quality, or diving into the codebase to debug an issue and ship a bug fix, you will lead by example as a technical expert who loves the craft of building software.
This role is ideal for a former hands-on engineer who has built impressive products and now wants to build exceptional teams. You will contribute to a powerful, all-in-one talent acquisition platform used by industry leaders like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. Expect a fast-paced, intellectually rigorous environment where you are expected to challenge industry norms, champion developer experience, and empower your team to deliver magical outcomes while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
