Difficult Negative San Jose, CA

My first round started with a quick, easy set of questions about my experience, and it didn’t take long to get scheduled for the technical part. The technical interview was the real challenge: it covered heat transfer, fluids, energy, and control. None of the topics felt impossible, but they were broad and jumped around, which made it hard to feel fully prepared even when I knew parts of the material.

The difficulty mostly came from how they asked things—hard questions, and the overall goal felt like they were trying to figure out how I’d work with the company, not just whether I could get answers right. The panel tone was serious, but I understood the intent: they wanted to assess whether I’d actually fit.

The process started with phone calls: an HR screen first, then a hiring manager conversation, and eventually I got pulled into an on-site day. The on-site experience felt full and formal—meeting with a large set of interviewers one-on-one (roughly eight to ten people), and even having a dedicated one-hour presentation after lunch.

Most of the day was about going deep into my work. Several interviewers had a strong grasp of the subject and kept pushing on details from my experience, trying to understand how I actually approached problems. The overall difficulty depended on the person in the room, though: some questions felt directly aligned with my background, while a few went outside what I knew well, which made it easy to feel like the bar changed between conversations.
