I started with a recruiter conversation to walk through the role and what the day-to-day would look like. The next round was with the hiring manager. Most of it felt straightforward: background questions, and the usual “why this company” and “why this work” framing, with a surprisingly strong focus on Anthropic’s mission and how seriously they take it.

What stood out to me was how explicit they were about compensation—there didn’t seem to be any room to negotiate pay or benefits. Even though the overall vibe was easygoing and focused on fit, that constraint made the recruiter chat feel more like an explanation of how the process works than a discussion where my preferences could be shaped.

My process started like it had good momentum: I applied for a Support Engineer role that had a published compensation band, and the recruiter reached out quickly. During the recruiter call, though, the mismatch showed up in a way that caught me off guard—the screen was for a different, lower-level Product Support Specialist role with a much lower stated band.

The confusing part was timing and clarity. I didn’t realize the title and band were different until well more than halfway through the call, and it left me questioning whether I was actually being evaluated for the job I applied to or whether I’d been redirected midstream. On top of that, scheduling felt messy. I was told I hadn’t scheduled in my timezone even though I’d provided my availability multiple times, and the recruiter had to confirm the office/target location several separate times.
