Difficult Negative United States

I applied on the company website and heard back from a recruiter within a couple of days. The flow started with a phone screen, followed by a technical conversation that lasted about an hour. The interviewer was friendly and came across like they were genuinely trying to understand how I thought rather than just fire off random questions.

After that, I reached the final round, which was roughly two hours with the team. The questions mixed technical and behavioral pieces, and the overall feel was strong and positive. I left that round feeling like the conversation had momentum and that I’d represented myself clearly.

Negative San Francisco, CA

I talked to a recruiter on the phone and the whole conversation felt standard until they mentioned a new company-wide requirement. They said everyone had to have a degree, even if it wasn’t related to the job I was applying for, and that they’d even laid off people who didn’t meet it.

I don’t have a degree, and I was honestly surprised they didn’t catch that during the screen. The interaction left a sour taste because it felt like a blunt filter that didn’t have anything to do with how I could do the work.
