I started with an HR call where they asked a few basic questions, including my expected CTC, and then they sent me a test assignment. I spent five days on it—honestly pushing very hard and losing sleep—to deliver what I thought was the best possible submission. After I turned it in, I followed up for feedback and then got the frustrating message that they didn’t have the budget.

It left me completely thrown off. If there was no budget, it didn’t make sense to me that they would still ask for the assignment in the first place. Because it came through a referral, I also felt even more strongly that my submission likely wasn’t reviewed the way it should’ve been. The whole experience ended with no offer and a lingering sense of wasted effort.
