Difficult Negative Indianapolis, IN

Right away, my process felt oddly off. The recruiter screen started with her showing up without her camera on, and even though I kept mine active, the interaction felt more like she was scanning my answers than engaging with me. She acknowledged that the invite didn’t mention camera-off, but said she’d take notes off camera to stay focused.

At first, the call followed the usual recruiter flow: walking through my professional history, what had me looking around, and what I understood about the product. Then she dropped into a question about troubleshooting a webpage—something that wasn’t mentioned in what I’d been told to expect. The prompt didn’t come with concrete details, so when I asked for specifics about what was wrong with the page and what expected vs. actual behavior looked like, she basically shut down the conversation by refusing to provide more context.

Average Positive Australia

My process started with a recruiter call that was about thirty minutes, mostly to align on the job and what the next steps would look like. After that, I met the hiring manager to talk through my background and assess whether the fit felt right on both sides. The whole thing moved for me over several weeks, and I kept feeling like it was taking the time it needed rather than rushing.

The next stage was a take-home assignment where I had to build a simple app using front-end libraries like Instant Search and then use whatever else I wanted around it, including options for backend APIs and Autocomplete. Alongside the build, there were also practice-style questions that reflected common problems you’d run into day to day. I remember thinking it was genuinely rewarding, even though it was a lot—especially because the entire process felt long compared to what I was used to.
