AEI Interview Guide
Everything we know about interviewing at AEI: the process stage by stage, what each round tests, and reports from candidates who interviewed.
Interviewing at AEI
What the process looks like, and what AEI is really testing for.
AEI runs a multi-step loop that mixes fit interviews with research-team interviews and a technical assessment. The distinctive signal across the reports is that interviewers repeatedly probe alignment, meaning how your values and beliefs connect to their mission and the scholar driven work.
What they test is your ability to do research work, not just discuss it. Their most prominent topics are Stata, statistical analysis, tax policy research, and analytical problem solving, plus data assessment and timed tests and microdata handling. They also test how you interpret data, communicate technically, and work with public datasets, with econometrics and written assessments appearing as additional technical signals.
The process is portrayed in reports as structured and evaluation like, starting with HR screening and moving quickly or gradually into asynchronous or time bound work. Reports repeatedly mention limited time for deep probing during later conversations, and some candidates report unclear closure after the final rounds. There is no reported offer in the aggregated data, so you should expect a high focus on correctness and fit even when the experience feels friendly.
The strongest non-obvious theme is alignment to mission and scholar driven work, they bring it up across HR and later interviews, and they connect it to the specific research domain they care about, not just to generic “culture fit.”
The AEI interview process

HR Screening

Technical Assessments
asynchronous over days or timedYou complete technical evaluations to assess research skills and knowledge. The topics data and reports both point to Stata focused work, using public microdata, plus data interpretation and sometimes spreadsheet based analysis and timed or written components.
Team-Based Interviews
multiple interview conversationsYou meet with members of the research team to evaluate collaboration and fit. Reports describe deep, question-heavy conversations that probe how you think, how your work connects to their research domain, and whether you can translate your experience into their scholar driven workflow.
Interviews with Scholars and Leadership
final interviewsFinal interviews include scholars and leadership who will be your supervisors. Reports highlight that these rounds often emphasize alignment, your beliefs connected to mission and the topics and scholars they care about, plus your ability to engage at a high level.
