The professor set up a very simple meeting, and the interview itself didn’t have much ceremony.

They focused on my research experience, what motivated me, and what my plan for the future looked like.

The timing matched the simplicity—within the next week, the process moved to an offer stage. The pay was mentioned as low, but it was still presented as genuinely helpful for graduate students.

I didn’t end up with an offer, but the experience gave me a clear sense that the decision hinged on motivation and basic research fit rather than elaborate screening. It felt almost too straightforward for how high-stakes it can be, but that was exactly why it stood out.
