I got pulled into Shopify’s process with a recruiting call that felt unusually scripted from the start.

The recruiter introduced a candidate guide they described as “spicy,” and they asked a lot of questions to make sure I understood the controversial stances Shopify holds. After that, I proceeded through a loop that had fairly familiar components under quirky names: a Life Story recruiter screen, a pair programming coding exercise, a technical deep dive tied to past work, and then a technical problem-solving / systems design style session.

What really made the experience feel distinctive was the use of online assessments via Criteria, including an IQ test (Universal Cognitive Aptitude Test)
