After a first conversation where the expectations were set, I realized the interviewer wanted me to already know a lot about how ATMs work.

I didn’t have that background, and I could feel the mismatch right away. They tightened the discussion and narrowed down to areas of my experience I was actually strong in, which helped me regain some footing.

The vibe was definitely more evaluative than conversational—I was being judged against a specific domain I hadn’t prepared for. Even though I didn’t have the ATM knowledge they were looking for, I felt the process shifted toward what I could do well, and that made the conversation easier to follow. I didn’t end up getting an offer, but I left knowing exactly where I’d come up short.
