My first step was a recruiter-style phone screen, and then I moved into a phone interview with the director of analytics.

That call felt more structured and “normal” than what I later heard from other processes: they started with an overview of what the company’s products did, then asked a couple detailed questions about how I’d solved projects on my resume. I also got a problem that the interviewer helped me work through, and it came across as fair rather than tricky or adversarial.

I liked the way the director explained things—he was articulate and clearly knowledgeable—and I enjoyed talking with him, even though the conversation stayed fairly focused on my approach and reasoning. Unfortunately, I didn’t end
