My HR call was 45 minutes, and at first it felt normal.

Then the conversation turned awkward when the interviewer asked where I saw myself in five years. It honestly made me question the whole process—like it was using an outdated script and expecting me to answer in a way that didn’t match how I actually think about an engineering career.

The question put me in a weird spot because I didn’t want to lie, but the expected “career ladder” story didn’t seem aligned with the technical culture I associate with modern IT. After that, I didn’t feel good about continuing and the call left a bitter taste for the way the company seemed to frame growth.
