MITRE Systems Engineer interview experience

HardMcLean, VAPosted Mar 2013 · Candidate report, summarized by Dataford

My process started like many others, but salary became a noticeable theme early.

During HR’s discussion, I was asked directly about salary expectations and I gave a specific number that was only slightly above what I was making elsewhere. The hiring manager then emphasized that the role wasn’t really about money in multiple ways, and it was hard not to feel like that framing was already steering the decision.

Next I made a presentation to a panel, using my graduate thesis and the briefing slides I had sent in advance. The session went well—questions were thoughtful and the panel seemed friendly—but there was an odd moment where the hiring manager kept yawning noticeably.
