The early step was a talent screener call that felt like a quick fit check: what I’d been working on, a difficult problem I’d solved, and what interested me.

It went smoothly, though it also felt brief enough that I walked away a little uneasy.

About a week later, I had a follow-up with management on Zoom. That conversation felt more laid back, and we discussed what I was currently working on, including a bit of personal conversation before the discussion turned to price. It ended almost immediately after they told me they saw my requested range and typically it aligned with more experience. They didn’t negotiate further, which made it feel like they were already aiming at a much lower number.
