My first step was a fairly short online interview where the questions were mostly tied to my background and projects.

It lasted around forty minutes, and along the way I was asked about my experience as well as a forward-looking question about where I saw myself in five years.

The vibe overall was positive, but the result was that I didn’t pass. The reason they gave me, in broad terms, was that they needed more experimental experience. There weren’t any coding tasks or take-home work involved; it was mostly discussion.

That left me with a clear, straightforward reflection: even when the conversation goes well and the tone stays friendly, they can still be strict about the specific type of experience
