Google DeepMind Research Engineer interview experience

MediumCandidate report, summarized by Dataford

My process started with questions from my side about what the coding part would look like, and the more I asked around, the clearer it became that coding wasn’t just a quick warm-up.

I also saw a lot of concern and curiosity tied to the later-stage “code review” style of evaluation—exactly the kind of thing people associate with final-round pressure.

When I kept looking into what others experienced for a Research Engineer interview, the theme that came through was that the questions weren’t just about getting to an answer; they involved explaining and being reviewed on how I reasoned through the work. That made the overall vibe feel more demanding than a simple take-home or typical timed coding screen, even though I couldn’t pin down every question beforehand.
