I got pulled in through an internal contact and then moved into a fairly personal set of meetings: one-on-one conversations with HR, the hiring manager, and research heads from other departments.

The interviews themselves were pleasant and the interviewers were personable, but the hiring manager came across as noticeably overworked and tired, which changed the energy of the conversations.

Even with that less-than-energized atmosphere, I did receive positive feedback. Still, the process didn’t turn into an offer. Looking back, what stayed with me most wasn’t any difficult question—it was the overall feel of the working environment and the sense that enthusiasm and fit weren’t enough to overcome whatever was going on behind the scenes.
