I went through a pretty typical early sequence for Coursera: I’d applied through an on-campus fair, then I got an online coding challenge that stayed open for about two weeks.

The challenge had two questions with a strict one-hour deadline to finish them. The first problem was manageable if I was willing to be a bit non-optimal, but the best solution seemed to require a lot more work because it leaned on an approach that was hinted at rather than straightforward.

The second question was where I felt the most pressure. It was framed like a dynamic programming challenge, and that took more time to get traction than I expected. Overall, the difficulty matched what the process was communicating—this wasn’t a quick warm-up, and I felt like the clock mattered.
