ByteDance Software Engineer interview experience

RemotePosted Oct 2024 · Candidate report, summarized by Dataford

My interview felt tense from the start because the loop seemed to hinge on this round—after I did it, I wasn’t sure if there would even be a third one.

During the live coding, I got two prompts. I struggled for about ten minutes on the first problem and eventually gave a solution, but the interviewer wasn’t convinced and pushed me to rethink it.

What really threw me off was the insistence on making the approach more optimal, specifically using dynamic programming. By the time I was adjusting to that direction, I felt like I was reacting to the interviewer’s expectations more than driving the solution on my own, and that uncertainty carried the whole session. I left with the sense that my progress wasn’t moving as smoothly as I’d hoped.
