I started with a phone screen with a recruiter, then quickly moved into a first-round interview with a sales manager.

I was rejected after that first round, and I was left genuinely unsure about what went wrong.

The interviewer said he wanted the conversation to be more conversational, but it came across as a rigid set of questions. He didn’t show much emotion, and the whole thing felt picky, with criteria that seemed vague. It also felt like they expected knowledge I didn’t yet have, even though I didn’t have direct sales experience to lean on.

Because there was so little emotion and so little explanation, the rejection felt more confusing than informative.
