I had a pretty standard run at it: apply online, get contacted shortly after, and then show up for a one-on-one interview with the manager.

The interviews were generally scheduled quickly—often within a day or two—and the in-store conversations didn’t last long, roughly around 15 minutes.

Most of the questions were basic and geared toward whether I could do the job and commit to the role: why I wanted to work there, whether I had work experience, and sometimes availability expectations and wage thoughts. The interview setting was casual enough that it didn’t feel intimidating, but it also meant the exchange was very much to the point.

What made me feel thrown off was how much the process sometimes depended on the manager’s vibe
