American Express Software Engineer interview experience

Posted Aug 2025 · Candidate report, summarized by Dataford

I came in as a referral candidate with about two years of experience.

The interview loop had three rounds. The first was with two interviewers and combined Java and Spring Boot style topics along with Kafka and GCP, plus two DSA problems. The second round was a deep dive into my project, and I was also asked to design a payment gateway. The third round was a hiring manager behavioral discussion plus a logic puzzle.

I didn’t end up getting an offer, but the loop felt detailed and very project-anchored—especially the middle system design-style portion that focused on how I would build a payments-related system.
