Interviewing at UPS
What the process looks like, and what UPS is really testing for.
UPS interview loops are built around multiple recruiter or HR touchpoints followed by manager and leadership conversations, with interviews that heavily mix role fit and communication with core technical topics. Interview communication is repeatedly emphasized as a topic, and stakeholder communication also shows up strongly.
Across the roles in your guides, the most prominent technical topics are Java, Spring Boot, SQL, and data-focused skills like reading and interpreting graphs or charts. You should also expect customer service fundamentals, product management, and Data Science conceptual questions to appear in the topic set, plus REST API and deployment themes in reported interviews.
What the candidate reports show most clearly is the workflow shape: screening first, then one or more team or manager interviews, sometimes with a final round involving senior directors. Timelines in reports vary, from a few days to a multi-month span, and outcomes can be communicated quietly via automated emails. A very small overall offer rate (0.2% in the aggregated candidate reports) means you should assume the bar and competition are high.
The topic data is dominated by specific technical areas, especially Java, Spring Boot, SQL, and technical communication, while candidate reports show the process can pause for weeks with limited updates or automated rejection emails, so planning around uncertainty is important.

Application review
After you applyUPS reviews your application to assess qualifications and fit. At least some paths include a specific reference to reviewing your application for the Security Engineer position.
Recruiter or HR phone screening (multiple possible variants)
Same week to a few daysYou may speak with a recruiter and or HR recruiter to discuss background, resume details, expectations, motivation, and basic alignment. Some reports also mention self-assessment style prompts or the use of early assessments that shape the process.
Initial screening and/or recruiter-led qualification check
Short window after phone screenThis step focuses on basic qualifications and motivation, sometimes described as conducted via recruiter phone call or online assessment. HR may verify alignment with the role demands.
Behavioral interview and/or manager interviews
Several hours to 1-2 weeks depending on schedulingYou may meet a hiring manager and team member for behavioral fit, and in some cases senior leadership is included to assess situational decision-making and team collaboration. Candidate reports commonly describe discussions centered on your background and how you approach earlier work, with professional and structured questioning.
Technical interviews and formal rounds with managers or team
Typically multiple interviews within the loopYou can expect formal and manager-led technical discussions that include core language and framework topics from the topic set, especially Java, Spring Boot, and SQL. Reported technical sessions include REST API and deployment discussions, and at least one report shows SQL or PL/SQL progressing to practical scenario tasks.
Final round with senior leadership
Final decision stage after prior interviewsSome roles include a final round with senior directors, conducted in person or via video conference. Candidate reports also describe quieter outcomes after interviews, including automated rejection emails, and in at least one case a few days from the final steps to an offer.
