Difficult Neutral Berkeley, CA

My process started with a phone screening with another PhD. The conversation quickly turned into statistics and math questions, and it felt pretty direct and high-level. During the chat, I also got the sense the interviewer wasn’t fully enthusiastic about the day-to-day of the role, so I asked straight about flexibility and how new hires were assigned. I was told the role wasn’t very flexible, and that group placement was initially somewhat random—meaning some people ended up in teams that didn’t match their strengths.

The next day I was invited to the first part of the virtual onsite, with two back-to-back rounds. One round focused on statistics and was run by a statistics PhD, and the other was machine learning with an interviewer who had a background similar to mine. Although I couldn’t tell how much the broader process was known by that second interviewer, the discussion still lined up closely with my area.

Difficult Neutral United States

My recruiter call led into a probability-and-puzzles style first round. That part required some real cleverness, and I immediately got most of the approach right—but I tunnel-visioned and missed details that mattered, like scaling and symmetry. Even when I felt close, the interviewer didn’t prod me to complete the full line of reasoning, so I ended up stopping short of where the solution likely needed to go.

It was one of those interviews where the right instincts can still fail you if you don’t finish the complete chain, and the way the conversation unfolded didn’t give me much recovery space.
