Interviewing at State Street
What the process looks like, and what State Street is really testing for.
State Street’s interview loop, based on reported process steps across roles, is built around multiple layers: resume and fit screening, recruiter screening, behavioral interviews, and then technical assessments and/or team and hiring manager interviews. The technical portion is not one single format, it can include whiteboarding and scenario based case study style evaluation, and it also shows up as practical backend and query work in some reports.
What you get tested on maps strongly to the topic list: SQL and Java are highly prominent, Spring Boot and AWS Cloud are also at the top, and VaR, Fund Accounting, and Data Science general concepts are listed as prominent technical areas. Behavioral, communication, and cross functional collaboration show up as meaningful portions as well, with problem solving and adaptability appearing but at lower prominence than the core technical topics.
From candidate reports, processes range from quick and structured to very drawn out with low communication. Reports mention getting timeline information in some cases, but others describe long waits with limited updates until the end, and at least one report includes a rejection without clear follow up during the process.
Even though you will likely prepare for technical topics like SQL, Java, Spring Boot, and the finance domain areas (VaR and Fund Accounting), the loop also consistently includes behavioral and cross functional collaboration assessment, so your ability to communicate your thinking and teamwork experience is part of the evaluation, not an optional add on.
The State Street interview process
5 stages, based on 500 candidate reports.
Initial Screening
UnknownYou start with a preliminary assessment reviewing your resume and general fit for the role. Reports describe early conversations as high level, focused on background and fit rather than deep technical evaluation.
Recruiter Screen
UnknownA recruiter screen covers your background and fit, and it also verifies eligibility and logistics such as location and work authorization. Reports describe it as straightforward, sometimes including availability and practical coordination.
Behavioral Interviews
UnknownBehavioral rounds assess interpersonal skills and alignment with corporate culture, including leadership capabilities and conflict resolution. Prepare structured examples that show cross functional collaboration and how you handle pressure or stress.
Technical Assessments and Case Study Evaluations
UnknownYou may go through technical assessments that evaluate competencies relevant to the role, including data science oriented assessments for some roles and other technical capability tests. Case study evaluations are also reported as a way to assess problem solving through real world business scenarios, and reports describe whiteboarding and scenario reasoning.
Team Member and Hiring Manager Interviews
UnknownYou meet team members, and later hiring managers, to evaluate fit and your capability for the role and its analytical backlog. Some reports also describe senior management interviews as a final exploration of background and capabilities, with an additional manager focused discussion in some cases.
