MSD Interview Guide
Everything we know about interviewing at MSD: the process stage by stage, what each round tests, compensation by level, and reports from candidates who interviewed.
Interviewing at MSD
What the process looks like, and what MSD is really testing for.
MSD’s interviews follow a fairly standard loop shape, with multiple early screens, then live panel or hiring manager interviews, and sometimes an online assessment. Across candidate reports, the tone is often described as conversational and warm, and you are usually expected to answer with specific, concrete details rather than staying high level.
What they test is heavily skewed toward system design and role-relevant technical depth. System design appears at the maximum prominence in the topic data, and role technical areas show up at very high prominence as well: SQL (93rd percentile), Data Engineering (96th percentile), Data Analysis (96th percentile), and Machine Learning Engineering (95th percentile). Other prominent areas include data analysis, communication skills, problem solving, and technical interviewing.
The loop is designed to move quickly once you reach later steps. Candidate reports describe schedules that can complete within roughly two weeks, with stages including phone or Zoom screens, panels or hiring manager discussions, and at least one assessment or task depending on the path.
You will likely be evaluated on how precisely and step by step you explain your decisions and results, not on memorized answers. Multiple reports emphasize that interviewers push you for concrete details and coherent reasoning, especially in system design discussions.
The MSD interview process
6 stages, based on 554 candidate reports.
Initial Screening
Short call or video stepYou typically start with an agency recruiter or internal HR screen. Some reports and process notes describe video responses to technical questions and a fit check focused on your background and interest.
HR Screening Call
Short callA further HR conversation reviews your background, availability, and interest. This stage is described as straightforward and conversational, and it sets up how the rest of the process will proceed.
Recruiter Screen
Short callSome paths include an additional recruiter screen to align on basic qualifications and logistics. Reports describe this as an initial discussion of high-level technical experience and fit.
Online Assessment
Before live interviewsA subset of roles includes an online assessment. It is described as measuring cognitive ability, situational judgment, or analytical skills, and may include a preliminary online coding assessment.
Panel Interviews and/or Hiring Manager Interview
One or more sessionsYou may meet a hiring manager and/or a cross-functional panel. Candidate reports describe the interviews as conversational and direct, with interviewers asking for concrete details, and they often emphasize system design reasoning and practical application over obscure tricks.
Final Round Interviews and/or Technical-focused discussion
Final step(s)Some paths include first and final rounds, or back-to-back final discussions with peers, stakeholders, or senior leaders. Reports also describe final discussions where system design dominates, with structured explanations and trade-offs central to evaluation.
