MDRC Interview Guide
Everything we know about interviewing at MDRC: the process stage by stage, what each round tests, and reports from candidates who interviewed.
Interviewing at MDRC
What the process looks like, and what MDRC is really testing for.
MDRC interviews are heavily centered on data quality and research-style thinking, with early screens that quickly establish fit and motivation, then later rounds that repeatedly test your attention to detail on messy inputs. Several candidate reports describe an accuracy focused “test” and dataset scrutiny showing up both as a short assessment and as follow up technical discussion.
Across reported interviews, you should expect technical evaluation to dominate. The extracted topic prominence is highest for Data Analytics (Technical Skills) and Job talk preparation (Technical Skills), followed by Programming Fundamentals, Technical communication via research presentation, and Research Methods, and then repeated emphasis on Cleaning Data and Data Preprocessing, plus explaining research or education experience and fitting your work to the programming and research expectations of the role.
The process appears multi stage, with a phone screening and application review, then in person interviews that can include a job talk presentation and technical assessments, and a final round involving key stakeholders. Candidate reports also highlight that communication and scheduling can be inconsistent, with timelines sometimes promised but not followed by clear updates, and in multiple cases the overall end to end experience stretched over months.
The most useful signal to prepare for is dataset scrutiny: candidates repeatedly report being asked to spot anomalies or errors in provided information, then explain what you would do with it as part of research judgment.
The MDRC interview process
5 stages, based on 88 candidate reports.
Initial Screening (applications review)
1-2 weeks (typical, varies)You start with an application review step, and candidates report that this is followed by early screening conversations. Prepare to summarize your background and fit for the role, since later stages will build directly on what you demonstrate in these early checks.
Initial Phone Screening
30 min (reported in one case, varies)Candidates report an initial phone screen focused on basic qualifications and fit, including behavioral questions in at least one report and policy or role context in another. Expect to be asked why you want the role and to discuss your day to day work style and motivation.
In-Person Interviews (multi-person technical and fit)
full day possible (reported in one case)You meet with multiple people in person, and reports describe a mix of interviews assessing technical skills, research interests, and cultural or fit. Several reports emphasize dataset scrutiny and attention to detail as a major thread through the day.
Job Talk Presentation
included in in-person loop (length not specified)You deliver a job talk to demonstrate research communication and subject matter expertise. Prepare to clearly explain methods and results, since technical communication and job talk preparation are the top topic priorities in the extracted data.
Technical Assessments and Final Interviews
same day to later step (varies)You may complete technical assessments that focus on research methodologies and data analysis skills, with reports describing short tests tied to accuracy and anomaly spotting in provided data. The process can then include a final interview round with key stakeholders to finalize discussions.
