After the recruiter stage, I ended up doing a compact, multi-round Android-focused onsite process. I started with a hiring manager conversation, then moved into a debugging round where the interviewer expected me to reason through issues tied to real app behavior. From there, the rounds shifted into system design and Android architecture discussions, which felt like they were probing how I framed tradeoffs and explained structure rather than just coding syntax.
The native fundamentals portion was very hands-on. I was asked to fix a banner state problem by making sure the state was retained across orientation changes. I also worked on showing a favorite icon on products that were present in a favorites table, and I had a UI task where I needed to clip a view and apply rounded styling.

Average Positive Toronto, ON
The overall process felt organized, but one system design round threw me off in a very specific way. The problem framing was poorly defined, and the interviewer didn’t clearly communicate the requirements. When I asked basic clarification questions about what the expected scope/functionality was supposed to be, the answers weren’t really there—so after a while I was stuck trying to interpret what was being evaluated.
About 20 minutes into the discussion, the direction changed significantly. That made it hard for me to understand whether I was solving the right problem or responding to a moving target. Other rounds and interviewers I interacted with were professional, but that particular system design session definitely needed better alignment.
