Discord is a large consumer communication platform used by gaming, creator, school, and hobby communities. It has strong brand recognition and high engagement among retained users, but its product can feel complex to first-time users because value depends on joining the right server and understanding community norms.
Discord’s leadership wants a product evaluation of the current new-user onboarding flow across mobile and desktop. Internal data shows that while account creation is strong, a meaningful share of new users fail to join an active server, send a first message, or return in the first week. Qualitative research suggests confusion around whether Discord is for private friend groups, public communities, or real-time voice chat.
You are the PM asked to assess the onboarding experience and recommend improvements. Your goal is not to redesign the entire product, but to identify the biggest onboarding gaps, determine which user segments are most affected, and propose a focused set of changes that improve activation without harming trust or overwhelming users.
