"Tell me about a time you had to ensure your team communicated effectively with cross-functional partners such as Product, Design, Sales, or Operations. What was at stake, how did you set up communication, and what was the outcome?"
This question tests whether you can create clarity across teams that have different goals, vocabularies, and timelines. Interviewers want to see whether you proactively establish communication mechanisms, prevent misalignment before it becomes conflict, and keep stakeholders informed without creating unnecessary process.
They are also evaluating influence without authority: in many cross-functional situations, you cannot simply direct other teams. You need to align on decisions, surface risks early, and adapt your communication style to different audiences.
A strong answer uses one specific example with clear business stakes, explains the communication breakdown or risk, and shows the systems you put in place—such as decision logs, recurring syncs, written updates, or escalation paths. The best responses also include a measurable result and a reflection on what you changed in your own leadership approach afterward.
