HelloFresh launched a redesign of the My Menu experience in the app at the start of Week 5. In the same period, the team noticed a drop in weekly engagement and wants to know whether the decline came from the product change or normal seasonal behavior.
Use a difference-in-differences approach to test whether the redesign caused a statistically significant decline in engagement after controlling for seasonality using a holdout market.
Engagement is measured as the weekly proportion of active subscribers who opened My Menu at least once.
| Period | Market | Active Subscribers | Engaged Subscribers | Engagement Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre (Weeks 1-4) | Treated market (redesign launched) | 48,000 | 18,240 | 38.0% |
| Post (Weeks 5-8) | Treated market (redesign launched) | 50,000 | 17,000 | 34.0% |
| Pre (Weeks 1-4) | Holdout market (no redesign) | 46,000 | 17,020 | 37.0% |
| Post (Weeks 5-8) | Holdout market (no redesign) | 47,000 | 16,450 | 35.0% |
Assume the holdout market captures the same seasonal forces affecting the treated market. Test at a significance level of 5%.
