Duolingo-like language app LinguaNow is reviewing user retention after strong acquisition growth. The CPO wants a clear framework for thinking about early-, mid-, and long-term retention because teams are optimizing different metrics and reaching conflicting conclusions.
In the last quarter, LinguaNow acquired 1.2M new users. Of those, 62% completed onboarding, 41% were active on Day 1, 24% returned in Week 4, and 11% were still active in Month 6. A recent product update improved onboarding completion from 55% to 62%, but Month 6 retention remained flat at ~11%. The onboarding team claims success, while the growth and core product teams argue the product is not creating lasting habits.
Leadership wants you to define how retention should be measured differently across the user lifecycle, identify which metrics are leading vs lagging indicators, and explain how to diagnose whether the problem is activation, habit formation, or long-term product value.
